Professor Travis Kong is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. He specializes in the sociology of homosexuality, of prostitution/sex work, and of praxis. His research addresses who human beings are and how we are to live with a diversity of sexualities and genders in a rapidly changing world. Using people with non-normative (often stigmatized) identities and behaviours as examples, he examines how their lives are affected under specific historical and social circumstances with the ultimate aim of promoting their well-being and enhancing social inclusion. He has created a new path to understanding the complex interplay between socio-historical changes and individual lives, challenging Western-centric knowledge while building a transnational, cross-generational dialogue. His work has broad implications for identity, gender, sexuality, intimacy, family, community and health in today’s globalized world.

Professor Kong is the author of Chinese Male Homosexualities: Memba, Tongzhi and Golden Boy (Routledge, 2011), Oral Histories of Older Gay Men in Hong Kong: Unspoken but Unforgotten (HKU Press, 2019) and Sexuality and the Rise of China: The Post-1990s Gay Generation in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China (Duke University Press, 2023). He is the co-editor-in-chief of Sexualities: Studies in Culture and Society.

Professor Kong is committed to knowledge exchange and social impact. Notably, his scholarly work on older gay men has brought the welfare of older LGBTQ+ individuals to the public agenda, for which he won the Prism Award in 2014 and the LGBT+ Advocacy Award in 2020, acknowledging his contributions to the LGBT+ community in Hong Kong. He is appointed as the Rainbow Ambassador of Hong Kong Pride Parade in 2024-2025.
